Lil’ Kim is not disadvantaged by not possessing a stick of her own–she possesses a “magic clit,” which is presumably adjacent to her “magic box.” Like Mr. Cent, Lil’ Kim’s oral sex skills are also magical, capable of causing any man who experiences them to buy her cars, mink coats, and unspecified leather goods.
I don’t care for this song, but it’s not because of the wall-to-wall sex talk. I have a remarkably high tolerance for that kinda stuff. It’s that it just doesn’t sound very good. The beat is herky-jerky. I hate the stupid “what what” and “aaaaahhhhh. ” adlibs. The tickling guitar figure makes me wish I was listening to a better 50 Cent song, like say, “In Da Club.” And why are Lil’ Kim’s vocals buried so deep in the mix? Even when I first heard this song on the radio, I wanted to yell at the sound guy to turn up her mic. Her first verse, following 50’s introductory bragging, should be a loud declaration, but she sounds… muffled, especially on the first two lines. And on a song that’s practically nothing but sex brags, those brags should be in the red.
The listening public didn’t share in my frustrations. Despite the song not having a music video or a physical single release, it reached #2 on Billboard, stalling out behind the Beyonce/Jay-Z behemoth “Crazy In Love” (which I’ll try to do justice to on Day 177) for three weeks. It’s Kim’s biggest hit as a lead artist, though she did manage a #1 in 2001 with “Lady Marmalade” alongside Missy Elliott, Mya, Pink, and Christina Aguilera. All of the aforementioned will be featured on this blog, on days 299, 157, 324, and 222, respectively. And who’s Christina’s guest on Day 222’s song? None other than… Lil’ Kim!
